Best Adventure Travel Tips

From cruising across the savannah in Guyana on ATVs to exploring caves by candlelight in Guatemala, adventure travel always gets your blood pumping. The passion for adventure travel can take you 1000 meters high, to the tops of mountains, or 40 meters down, into the dark depths of the ocean.

For us, adventure travel is any travel that pushes you physically and emotionally, challenging you to conquer your fears. Unlike those (much-needed) relax days by the pool, adventure travel exhilarates you and leaves you with an appreciation for simply being alive.

Here are a list of our top adventure travel tips to help you with your next trip:

Do your research! Most real adventure travel takes you outside the main tourist hubs. Do your research before you leave home to find out if you need any special gear or vaccinations. The last thing you want is to show up to your dream destination unprepared.

Find out what the locals are up to. The locals always know the coolest, most off-the-beaten-track spots. They’ll also be up front with you and tell you whether that backflip off a cliff you were about to try is loco.

Go outside of your comfort zone! Travel is your opportunity to really push yourself and do something different. Paddle for that wave, jump on that zipline, eat that fried cricket, this is your chance to be daring!

Put down the camera. Remember to leave the camera at home some days and see each destination through your eyes rather than a camera lens.

Invest in good travel clothes. Travel clothes may look dorky, but having comfortable shoes and moisture-wicking socks is key for reaching the top of that mountain, while all the flip flop wearers are left in your dust. Check out our packing list for our most recommended travel apparel.

Safety first! It sounds lame, but people do get hurt while traveling and we don’t want you to be one of them. Repeat after us, no selfie is worth your life!

Always get travel insurance! It's better to be safe, than sorry. You might be fine, but you also might get into an accident or lose your phone. Trust us, travel insurance is always worth it. Click here to read more about it.

ADVENTURE TRAVEL PACKING LIST

LifeStraw bottle - If you’re heading anywhere that might not have safe drinking water, the LifeStraw bottle and filter is a must. They also have a one-for-one program where for every bottle purchased they provide a child one school year of safe drinking water! Check out our trip to Mexico with LifeStraw where we got to visit a school and install water filters!

Buff - You may feel like you’re on survivor wearing one these, but they are incredibly handy. Whether you’re using it to mop up sweat on a hot day, or to cover your mouth and nose on a long motorbike trip, you’ll want a buff! The UV protection also helps you stay out of the sun and avoid sunburns.

Daypack - This is an awesome backpack for day long hikes or just cruising around town. It’s water resistant, tear resistant and comes with a lifetime warranty. It’s a perfect pack for short adventures.

Rain jacket - We love our rain shell jackets from Patagonia. They are light enough to not feel super hot in the humid Bali rain and awesome for layering over warmer clothes in the cold Estonian snow.

travel insurance

Do I need travel insurance?

A common saying in the travel world is, "If you can't afford travel insurance, then you can't afford to travel!"

Buying travel insurance isn't about being overly cautious, or scared to travel, it's about being prepared if something goes wrong. It could be something as simple as losing your camera or phone, or it could be covering expensive medical bills if you get injured or sick.

Don't be scared ... just be prepared!

Three times travel insurance saved our butts!

Christine spent 4 nights in a hospital with Dengue Fever in Cuba and had all her medical bills covered. World Nomads covered more than double what it cost her to buy a full year of insurance!

Jules lost his new iPhone in Guyana and had it replaced by World Nomads. Simple as that!

We lost our camera at the airport in Bali and received 90% of the funds back to buy a new one!
