Cancun Itinerary: 2 Days to One Week

SPRING BREAK BABY! If that’s what comes to mind when you think of Cancun then well, you’re not wrong. Cancun is a world renowned party destination with the hottest bars, beaches and people. It is one of the most easterly points of Mexico and sits on the Caribbean Sea. This makes it the ideal location to sit back and sun bake with a pina colada, before really getting the fiesta started by checking out it’s bustling night life.

That is a fantastic way to spend a vacation, sure. But there is actually much more to Cancun than cocktails and hangovers. The entire Yucatan Peninsula is rich in culture and history. The area was once inhabited by the Maya people up until the 15th century. There are signs of their civilization all around this region, in the form of ruins and pyramids. It is estimated that 1 million people in this region currently speak Mayan (Yucatec) and three times that are of Mayan descent or hold Mayan names.

So before you book your next trip to the Yucatan Peninsula and travel to Cancun, check out the ultimate Cancun travel itinerary for you to make the most of your stay.

Cancun Travel Itinerary: 2 Days

With just a short stay in Cancun, you’ll first want to check out the most popular beach of the area: Playa Delfines. This absolutely picture perfect stretch of beach is sure to kick start your vacation vibes. White sands and more shades of blue and turquoise water than you’ve likely seen before. It’s one of the largest public beaches and is situated on a very interesting thin stretch of land. Just a road running down the middle, the open ocean to the east and a lagoon to the west, with not much distance between them.

Playa Delfines is really close to the airport and to the hotel zone, so getting there is super simple. Hop off your plane, jump onto one of the many convenient Cancun transfers from the airport and you’ll be checked into your hotel and off to the beach in no time! Now it’s time for the beach vacation to really sink in.

After a sufficient tan top up and dip in the Caribbean sea, a trip to La Isla Shopping Village is next on the cards. It’s an outdoor mall of sorts with every item you can think of. Fancy restaurants, chocolate parlors, ice cream, Mexican and international food – it’s got it all. A great place to relax and people watch.

Now chances are you’re in Cancun because you’d like to experience the legendary nightlife. Where better to experience this than at Coco Bongo‘s live show. Performers, theatrics, bubbles, foam cannons, live bands and DJs. Featured in MTV, Rolling Stone and Billboard Magazine, amongst others.

Following a night on the tiles, Day 2 calls for more relaxation and some Caribbean snorkeling. A really breathtaking and unique experience to Cancun is the Underwater Museum. The Museum consists of a number of different sculptures that are designed to help coral growth. This attracts marine life and in turn becomes and excellent snorkeling spot. Scuba can also be done here.

Cancun Itinerary: 3 Days

How about checking out one of the new 7 wonders of the world? Mexicos most visited archaeological site and UNESCO World Heritage site, Chichen Itza. A glimpse into an ancient world, built by the Mayan people around 600AD, it is one of the largest known Mayan cities. The most famous temple is known as El Castillo. It’s the main image associated with this city. However, Chichen Itza is much more than that. There are sacred cenotes, intricate stone carvings and designs, as well as a multitude of crumbling ruins.

The Mayan people built incredibly well designed cities, with special focus being on acoustics of large speaking areas to help project ones voice. There is also a ball court where the infamous Mayan ball game was played, with some matches thought to end in beheading.

Check out this highly rated Chichen Itza tour.

Cancun Itinerary: 4 Days

This region of the world boasts an incredible network of fresh water cenotes. The word ‘cenote’ means sinkhole. The reason for the hole is usually due to the rock being limestone. The limestone bedrock at some stage has collapsed, allowing ground water to sprout up. These cenotes are very sacred to the Mayan people as they believed it was a gateway to the Gods and the underworld.

One of the most spectacular cenotes to check out near Cancun is Dos Ojos. The cenote is part of one of the longest underwater cave systems, with an all year water temp of approximately 25c. Insanely clear waters and the sounds of birds chirping make for a magical experience.

Cenote Dos Ojos is a fairly straight forward drive from Cancun. You can pick up a car rental from Cancun airport and get yourself over here. It will come in handy for a few of the other recommended spots also.

As well as swimming, there are a few tour agencies that offer scuba diving. It is known as one of the must-do dive sites by locals and tourists alike.

Cancun Itinerary: 5 Days

If I’ve some how not managed to stress the rich culture and history of the Yucatan Peninsula enough just yet, then maybe a trip to Tulum will help you see! There really aren’t that many places in the world with so many archaeological sites, so well preserved in such a close vicinity. It really is the best opportunity you’ll have to dive deeper into a world long gone, so I’d recommend visiting as many of these areas as you can.

Tulum was one of the last cities built by the Mayan people and was used as a port. It held strong for 70 years following the arrival of the Spanish, but unfortunately the new settlers brought with them previously unknown diseases. This is thought to be one of the leading factors of Tulum’s demise.

The ancient city is situated on 40ft cliffs overlooking the Caribbean Sea. Once you have toured the ruins you can head to the stunning nearby beach. There are coral reefs just off-shore, making it an ideal location for some snorkeling or scuba diving.

Want to check out Tulum, cenotes and the Coba ruins in one day? Check out this affordable full day tour.

Cancun Itinerary: One Week

With some more time to explore the area slightly outside of Cancun, I would wholeheartedly recommend a quick trip to Merida. Merida has been twice voted the American Capital of Culture. It is centrally located within the Yucatan Peninsula, making it an idea satellite base to explore some of the more inland sites and attractions.

Merida’s cultural blend comes from the Mayan heritage, dating back as far as 2,600 BC, and the influence of the Spanish conquistadors. The concoction of cultures has produced a truly unique city, with its own characteristics found no place else. Rituals and beliefs from the old world and the new have created a vibrant identity within the city, where locals can be heard speaking Mayan whilst drinking coffee in front of colonial haciendas.

The food in Merida is like no other. My favorite restaurant is La Chaya Maya – serving a traditional Mayan menu with ancient ingredients. They even make their own tortillas in house. There is a large weekend market in Plaza Grande, outside of the Cathedral in Merida’s historical district. The best of the best in local street food is available here, as well as an assortment of souvenirs and other craft-shops.

There is a bustling art scene, numerous museums and some of the finest dining in Yucatan. Hope on a walking tour of the local cantinas and learn about Merída through your belly! Or take a Yucatan style cooking class that includes a visit to the local market.

Once you have spent some time sponging up as much culture as you can handle, the attractions beyond the city limits will easily fill the remainder of your days in this area.

Uxmal is touted as one of the most impressive Maya sites in Yucatan. The city is vast and considerably less busy than Chechen Itza. There is also a temple that you can climb up to take in the sights. The views from the top are astonishing as you can see the scale of Uxmal. You can also see other pyramids standing proud above the tree line.

Things To Do In Baja California Sur – Activities and Adventures

Baja California Sur in Mexico is the southern half of the Baja California Peninsula. The Pacific Ocean to the west, the Gulf of California to the east and a mountainous strip running down the middle. This combination allows for a whole range of adventures through the state. From sand, surf and Spanish learning; tequila tasting and baby turtles. There are so many things to do in Baja California Sur. We tried out a whole assortment of activities in order to compile the following list… the best of Baja Sur!

Learn Spanish in Cabo

We believe that it is imperative to at least learn the basics of the native language of the country you are visiting. This is a mark of a culturally appreciative and respectful traveler. A ‘por favor’ and a ‘gracias’ goes a very long way. And let’s face it – us native English speakers have it pretty easy when it comes to traveling.

Spanish in Cabo is the perfect place for your Spanish learning needs, with classes for all levels and end goals. They are a small yet growing operation, with a real family feel. More than 20 years of experience teaching languages and history, as well as their multicultural diversity helps them achieve their mission, to spread the use of Spanish and to provide an idea of some aspects of the complexities of Latin America with professionalism and an open intercultural approach.”

Courses on offer: multi-week, super intensive, online Skype lessons, cooking classes and basically any length you require!

We were at the start of a 2+ month trip around Mexico, so we opted for a 3 day crash course to get us set up with a good foundation to continue our learning as we travelled. Going in with a Spanish level close to 0, we were confidently introducing ourselves, discussing hobbies, interests and pass times, ordering at restaurants and starting to grasp the do’s and don’t’ of Spanish grammar. Loaded with a fresh bag of verbs in our vocab, we immediately noticed an appreciation from the local people as we tried our best to speak in their language.

Our teachers were Malena and Arabela. Their passion and patience creates a really comfortable learning environment. We not only learned some of the language, but the culture and history also. We were then taken on a culinary journey with Alan, as he showed us a simple recipe of enchiladas verdes, perfectly complimented with margaritas as we recapped our last few days of learning.

Spanish in Cabo can be found in both San José del Cabo and San Lucas. This area is at the southern-most tip of Baja, where the main airport is, and is a great starting point for your trip.

Cuervo’s House Tequila Tasting

Here’s an absolutely fantastic way to experience a history lesson of Mexican culture, whilst enjoying an evening out, sipping Tequila.

I really didn’t know a whole lot about tequila previously, other than its ability to quickly end my night. However, after an evening with Jorge Cuervo, I have a huge respect for the craft of making tequila and of course its place in Mexican culture. We were so inspired, we went to the town of Tequila in which the drink is named after in order to continue our learning (drinking).

The evening is hosted by Jorge Cuervo, a direct descendant of José Cuervo, whose name you will see on bottles in every drink store. José Cuervo is known for bringing tequila to the world. He is not the inventor, as tequila/mezcal was already being drank by the indigenous people of the area long before his arrival. What he did do, was bring in the distillery practices from Spain as well as distribution, sharing this drink with the world. Hence the drink being named after the town, not the other way around.

Nowadays it is being celebrated as an example of multiculturalism between the Spanish and indigenous people. Profits were reinvested into the local community, pathing streets and generating income.

This is just a snippet of information provided by Jorge’s encyclopedic knowledge of tequila. I left wishing I had brought a note book. The evening starts off with a short video about the history to quickly bring you up to speed. After that, Jorge explains how to actually drink tequila (hint: it’s not with salt and lime), how to taste it and taking you down the path of deciding what type of tequila is for you.

The tasting is accompanied by delicious canapés that pair with each type of tequila being drank.

The experience at Cuervo’s House, located in San José was incredibly well put together and I would highly recommend fitting this into your schedule.

Where To Stay in Baja California Sur

Cerritos Surf Town

The best surf in Baja Sur will be found in the area of Todos Santos. This is a quaint town with them good beach vibes. If you head just 15 minutes further south, you’ll find Playa Los Cerritos. This long crescent shaped beach has a point break at the top end, consistently pumping out peelers that can challenge more intermediate – advanced level surfers. The waves mellow out as you move down and in shore, offering something for everybody. Even brand new beginners.

Cerritos is everything you could ask for from a surf spot. It’s much less crowded than other areas due to being slightly out of town, as well as being less developed. This allows for a great community feel on the waves, where everyone is encouraging one another. Rather than the infamous ‘locals only’ surf culture you may find in some places.

We stayed at Cerritos Surf Town in their beach front studio. With an unobstructed view of the ocean and the beach merely a few paces away – how much better could it get! Cerritos Surf Town offer a taste of the surf life, with the luxuries thrown in. Beach showers, swimming pool, hot tubs and a pool bar. There is also wellness program with massages and yoga, if you needed any more help mellowing out in such a beautiful location. The staff are incredibly friendly and will stop and nothing to ensure you are comfortable.

Mayan Village Resort

If you are on a tighter budget and are looking for a beach shack get away, then the Mayan Village Resort is the accommodation option for you. Owned and operated by Cerritos Surf Town, these huts strip back to just the necessities. With that being said, they still have a swimming pool and you still have full use of the rest of the resort.

CRT Surf School

Once in Cerritos, you should learn from the best. And the best are at CRT Surf School. This is their beach, they are the locals and they are surfers through and through. They have spent their lives playing at the break on Cerritos as well as chasing waves around the country.

The instructors are fully certified in surfing and first aid, as well as having the long running state champion and national competitor in their ranks. CRT also put themselves forward as volunteer lifeguards. This goes to show how much they love this beach and their passion for the waves – they want every body visiting to experience it safely and to have a good time.

We had a lesson with Juan on our first day and then continued to rent boards for the following 5 days. Their lessons are structured to a number of different levels. Level 1 starts from the complete beginning and getting you up to foam master. Once you are king of the foam they will take you out to the line up and explain how to read the waves and finding the right one for you. They can assist you onto the waves, before moving up a level again to flying solo. Even when you are confident enough to get yourself onto the waves, Juan’s guidance and expert knowledge will have you up and catching almost every wave that rolls through.

This was my first experience of a surf lesson and I can honestly say I wish I had taken one years ago.

By renting from CRT, you have access to all of their boards any time. This means you can start on a long foamy and as your skills increase you can swap out to shorter, more challenging boards. They are stationed on the beach every single day, meaning you can avoid the hassle of taking boards back to your accommodation. Just rock up in the morning, grab what you need and hit the surf!

Sea Kayak Baja Mexico

Kayaking is one of the finest pursuits of the marine natural environment. It allows you to share the waters with wildlife in a way that causes least disturbance. The lack of engine noise gives you the opportunity to immerse yourself in the serene landscape with all of your senses.

The Sea of Cortez is known as the ‘Aquarium of the World’, due to its rich diversity of marine life. Migratory species such as humpbacks, grey whales, killer whales, manta rays, leather back sea turtles and the 1.5m Humboldt squid can be found here during the right seasons. There are huge varieties of fish and of course dolphins in these waters.

Sea Kayak Baja Mexico is located out of Loreto, a city with mountains backing one side and the Bahía de Loreto National Park in the water on the other. SKBM offer a range of trips for the complete beginner to the expert paddler. One thing they all share in common is a guarantee of quality equipment and professionalism.

Trips range from one day, to multi-day camping expeditions covering different islands. If you have the skills and knowhow to safely carry out a trip yourself, then there are different levels of rental options available, from all food, equipment and guides included; to bare bones with just the boating gear and safety devices.

Whale Sharks & Espirit Island

La Paz is fast becoming one of the worlds best destinations for swimming with whale sharks. This is due to the predictability of the whale sharks heading to a nearby bay in order to feed. As the northerly fronts bring plankton and krill down, they pool in the bay areas. Animals always follow the food, meaning during the right time of the year (oct-feb), the whale sharks can be found in this area.

The world has gone through many changes in the last 10 years. What is acceptable in animal tourism has developed as we have learned from these animals. Certain countries are leading the charge when it comes to regulating viewings and interactions. Canada for example, has made it a federal crime to harass marine mammals, with clear guidelines for whale watching boats and pleasure craft alike. Washington State has followed suit in order to protect the endangered Southern Resident Killer Whales.

La Paz has also gone through changes in the last few years, with increased government regulation on whale shark tours in order to protect the natural behaviors of the whale sharks and ensure they are not being negatively affected. For starters, the ‘opening day’ of the season is decided by the government. There needs to be at least 5 whale sharks in the area before any tour can begin. Once it’s open, each boat going out must purchase permits for all passengers, to be shown to officials before being allowed to leave the harbor. There are restrictions of distances for motorized vehicles and of course absolutely no touching of the animals.

It is great to see local communities taking steps to not only promote their environment and the wildlife that lives within it, but to protect it for generations to come. These changes can be brought out in other areas too, by people realizing the power of the tourist dollar. As a community of travelers, we need to ensure to only spend our money on ethical and sustainable tourism, creating a demand. If you are unsure, ask!

“What steps are taken to protect these animals?”

“How is it regulated?”

“Is this animal acting naturally or is it being forced to change its behaviour?”

“Does this animal want me to do this?”

side note – sometimes animals don’t know what’s best for them i.e. feeding wild animals

As well as whale sharks, a snorkel tour around Espirit Island is a huge must in La Paz. On this tour you will be able to swim in the ‘Worlds Aquarium’ – the Sea of Cortez. Again, I urge you to do your research into your choice of tour provider. Be sure you are happy with their practices of not only this tour, but other areas in which they operate. The good far outweigh the bad, and I am confident you shall make the right choice.

What to Do in Belize: Adventure Activities

Un-Belize-able – this is the nation’s tag line and as well as being an incredibly good pun, it is actually something you will find yourself continuously muttering throughout the trip. The crystal clear waters of the islands, the delicious BBQ cuisine, the vast array of nature and wildlife and “Go Slow!” attitude of the locals. The place truly is, Un-Belize-able! We had to say it! But in all honesty, Belize adventure activities span from snorkeling and scuba diving to exploring ancient ruins.

With a country offering just so much it can make it difficult to decide what to do in Belize. But fear not, I’ve put together the best tours, the must-see sights and a few hidden gems we happened upon.

Snorkeling in Belize

Belize boasts the second largest barrier reef in the world, only being topped by The Great Barrier Reef in Australia. The Belize Barrier Reef is a 190 mile stretch that is just 300 meters off-shore in the north. This means you only need to sit on a boat for a matter of minutes until you are in a prime snorkeling spot. Here are the best places to snorkel in the Barrier Reef in Belize:

Hol Chan

The best place to experience this world class snorkeling is Hol Chan Marine Reserve, which can be reached from either San Pedro on Ambergris Caye, or Caye Caulker. The reserve consists of coral reef, sea grass and mangroves. The words ‘Hol Chan’ mean ‘Little Channel’ in Mayan, due to the small opening in the reef for boats to fit through.

In this area, there are chances of seeing sea turtles, eagle and sting rays, nurse sharks, barracuda and many more animals.

Due to this being a marine reserve, your boat captain will go via the floating ranger station to collect permits. You will also be guided during this snorkel. It means someone leads your group and will be on hand to point out any wildlife you will see. Snorkeling in Hol Chan was a really cool experience and allowed us to find out extra information that we otherwise would not have discovered ourselves.

I would highly recommended forking out the extra cost of hiring a private boat. This allows you to leave earlier than the group tours. We were the first boat to arrive on site, and by the time we were getting out of the water for the next site, there was at least 15 other boats.

The Split at Caye Caulker

Another great place for taking a snorkeling tour in Belize is just off the beach on any of the islands! You really don’t have to go far to see wildlife. In fact, we spotted rays multiple times just from walking along the docks. However, my favorite free Belize snorkel spot would have to be the famous Split at Caye Caulker. The island was split down the middle during the infamous 1961 hurricane Hattie. The area of the split is now home to bars and restaurants, with a few different swim spots around each side. The deep channel attracts numerous fish and there is even a tall diving platform for some other water related antics, like perfecting your backflip.

Whale Sharks

Belize has a fairly short whale shark season in comparison to some other places, but if you happen to be in town then it’s always worth a shot! The best chances are in April and May, with some encounters a month earlier or later. The whale sharks turn up during the full moon in order to feed on the fish eggs being released. The reef to see them is called Gladden Spit and is 30 miles east of Placencia, and even if the whale sharks don’t arrive, this is still an incredible spot for diving in Belize.

Manatees

Belize has more manatees than any other country in Central America! They can be seen around the shallow waters of Belize City, Placencia and other marine reserves. One of the best locations for it is at Swallow Caye Wildlife Sanctuary, which can be reached from Caye Caulker. A local guide told me that swimming with manatees is no longer allowed, due to them being a protected species. But there are still many options for manatee watching, and there is always a chance of a manatee wandering over to you during one of your snorkel tours. They are wild, after all!

Belize Adventure Activities

Actun Tunichil Mukanl (ATM) Cave Adventure in Belize

Proclaimed as the number one sacred cave in the world by The National Geographic Society. The feature of numerous documentaries and visited by archeologists and geologists alike. If you were only ever going to do one cave tour in your life, then let this be it. This is hands down one of the best adventure activities in Belize.

This cave is home to the most spectacular formations of flow stone, with whole caverns glistening from floor to ceiling from mineral deposits. The cave is also home to artifacts of the ancient Maya people. The cave was first entered in 300-600 AD, it was not until 700-900 AD that they went deeper and started using the cave for ceremonies.

Caves were thought to be a connection to the underworld. A place closer to the Gods and therefore very sacred. It is thought that after a terrible drought the Mayan people were desperate for help. They decided to adopt some practices of other native groups further north, and use human sacrifice as an offering to the Gods to help their crops. The remains of which can still be found inside.

What to Bring on The ATM Tour

As mentioned, this is a wet cave. That means only bring with you clothing to swim in, some decent sneakers and a change of clothes after. Unfortunately, a few years ago a tourist let their camera slip and damage the remains of a skull within the cave. Due to this, absolutely no cameras, including GoPros, are allowed in the cave. Take this as an opportunity to immerse yourself in the experience of the cave without distraction.

There is a limit to the number of people allowed in the cave per day. This doesn’t stop it from filling up, so do whatever it takes to get your tour to leave as early as possible. We were one of the first groups in the cave, and after seeing how many people were coming in during our way out, it would have been a very different experience. Here is our full review of the Belize ATM Caves.

Because of the fragility of the site, you cannot visit the ATM caves on your own. Click here to book your ATM cave tour.

Mayan Ruins of Belize

There are a number of Mayan ruins around Belize, with the most impressive being in the ATM cave mentioned above, and Xunantunich ruins. Xunantunich is located in western Belize, just a stone’s throw from Guatemala. It is located on top of a ridge above Mopan River. It is still unsure why the Mayan people abandoned this city, but it is one of the largest ever built. Visiting this ancient site is one of the most unique things to do in Belize.

The main feature is known as ‘El Castillo’ – the Castle – which is still the second largest manmade structure in Belize. It is possible to connect a tour of Xunantunich with Tikal, which is just across the border into Guatemala. This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is believed to have once been the capital of one of the most powerful kingdoms of the ancient Maya. Although these are the most visually impressive, there are a number of smaller Mayan sites around most Belize communities.

The Great Blue Hole Tour

The Great Blue Hole is a marine sink hole spanning 318 meters across and 124 meters deep. It’s situated near the center of Lighthouse Reef and is absolutely out of this world. The Great Blue Hole is part of the Belize Barrier Reef and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s ranked as number one on the Discovery Channels list of the “Ten Most Amazing Places on Earth”, and is a popular spot amongst divers. Of all the things to do in Belize, the Great Blue Hole is a must!

That’s a whole lot of reasons to get yourself to this spectacle! It truly is a sight to be seen, and I have never seen anything like it before. The best access is from Caye Caulker or San Pedro, as they are closest. Scuba tours are all for the entire day, due to the fairly lengthy boat ride to get there. But you will be rewarded with a deep ocean sinkhole with cave features such as stalagmites. This is a novelty dive, due to the unique experience. The waters can be crystal clear and there is marine wildlife such as sharks. However, to really see the Blue Hole in it’s entirety you need to see it from above.

How To See The Great Blue Hole from Above

To see the Great Blue Hole from the sky we took a scenic flight with Tropic Air. They depart from Belize City, Caye Caulker, San Pedro and Placencia, meaning it is accessible from pretty much anywhere you stay. The planes are small puddle jumpers, which allows everybody to get a window seat. The flight over was breathtaking. The water is so clear that you have the possibility of seeing manatees, dolphins and other marine life en route. Once we reached the Blue Hole, the pilot circled around to give both sides of the plane plenty of opportunity to take it all in. The photos truly speak for themselves and this experience was a highlight of the trip for me.

The scale of the hole is only apparent when you see how tiny boats are in the surrounding waters, which is why seeing it from the sky really is the best way.

Wildlife in Belize and Best Places to See It

I have already mentioned the marine life: manatees, sharks, rays and sea turtles… Well nature is equally abundant on land!

Toucans

The keel-billed toucan is the national bird of Belize. Its image can be seen all over the country. They predominantly feed on fruits and can be found within the Belizean forests.

Scarlet Macaw

One of the most impressive and magnificent birds within the parrot family. The best place to see the Scarlet Macaw in Belize is Red Bank, en route to Placencia, as the frequent this area.

Harpy Eagle

One of the most powerful eagles in the Americas, a harpy eagle is known to feed on large prey such as monkeys and sloths. The eagle has almost been made extinct from Belize due to forest fragmentation, nest destruction and others things. However the Belize Harpy Eagle Restoration Project and the Belize Zoo are doing their best to help restore populations.

Coatimundi

The coati is a member of the raccoon family and behaves similarly, in the sense that they will feed on whatever they get their hands on. Their long snout makes them visually distinct from raccoons.

Howler Monkeys

Howler monkeys are like the dinosaur of the Belize jungle. Fun fact: the sound used for the T-Rex in Jurassic Park is from howler monkeys. That gives you a sense of just how scary their howl is. And it is terrifying. The howling is used to warn other groups of monkeys to stay out of their territory. Every evening, just as dusk comes in, the jungle is electrified with their blood curdling roars. We stayed for a few nights along Belize River and were able to find them each day, not far from our hotel near Belmopan. Howler monkeys are one of the coolest things to see in Belize.

Green Iguana Conservation Project

The San Ignacio Resort Hotel is leading the charge in green iguana conservation. At the base of the hotel’s property is an enclosure used as a space for iguanas to grow in strength and size, before being released into the wild. This is a highly interactive activity and our guide was extremely knowledgable and was great at passing that information on to us.

The Best Place to See Wildlife in Belize

The ultimate location for experiencing wildlife would be from one of the many jungle retreats and eco hotels that are found in western Belize. Around the areas of Belmopan and San Ignacio, resorts are spread along the rivers. Water obviously attracts wildlife, and from most of these locations you will see an array of animals and birds. From these accommodations, you can also book guided jungle hikes and canoe tours to get even deeper into nature. See below for recommended resorts.

How To Travel In Belize

Entering Belize Overland

Belize shares a border with Mexico and Guatemala. There is one main road from both, leading to Belize City. The one bus journey our trip relied on did not go well. Taking a bus in Belize can be difficult to find bus timetables and there were long waits for the Mexican border crossing. It’s possible that others have had more success; this is only my experience. This may be down to needing to link up different operators from Mexico and Belize. As with all countries, you get what you pay for.

A taxi can remove all of the hassle. Drivers are willing to take you between the major towns, usually working out cheaper than booking transfers through a hotel.

Belize by Boat & Ferry

Entering Belize from Chetumal, Mexico is best done by ferry direct to either San Pedro or Caye Caulker. Taking a ferry in Belize is actually fun because the views are stunning and the ride is fairly smooth on the flat Caribbean Sea. Going to Caye Caulker does still require you to depart at San Pedro and go through customs, so factor that in to your schedule.

The Belize ferry system links up all of the islands as well as getting to the mainland at Belize City. Once you are in country, this is fairly inexpensive with multiple departures every day.

Flying to Belize (And Around Belize)

The fasted, most spectacular and hassle free form of transport. Tropic Air Belize offer a number of flights between all of the major destinations. This allows you to turn your transfer day into an adventure of itself. With the aircraft being small bush planes, it means they can get in to the smallest airports in remote locations. The flights themselves are truly breath taking. You’ll fly over jungle and sea, with the opportunity to spot wildlife during that.

Tropic Air also have international flights to Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras.

Hitchhiking in Belize

Hitchhiking is a super common form of transportation in Belize. Many locals use hitchhiking to get around. You’ll probably see small groups forming of people waiting for a ride. You can offer to help pay for gas, but it’s usually not required. Here is our experience hitchhiking around Belize: Tips for Hitchhiking in Belize

Winter Activities in Lake Tahoe

The days are getting shorter, the temperature is dropping and there’s a chill in the air. There may even be some snow on the ground already! So what better time to bust out some awesome winter activities in Lake Tahoe with family or friends!

You may be feeling like now is the perfect time to snuggle into some warm slippers and sit back with a hot chocolate in front of an open fire. Well, I’m here to convince you that yes that is in fact a great idea – BUT – you don’t have to close your eyes in hibernation and wait until the snow melts. There are plenty super fun outdoor adventures to be had through winter.

Where better to explore the winter wonderland than Lake Tahoe. Our friends from Hotel.com invited us to share some hot tips for cold trips, so here it is! Your hot chocolate will taste all the more sweeter when enjoyed after a great day out. Along with some fun winter activities you’ll also find plenty of great places to stay at Lake Tahoe and around the area.

Skiing and Snowboarding in Lake Tahoe

There is absolutely no shortage of options when it comes to skiing around the Lake Tahoe area. It is actually one of the main draws for the winter adventure enthusiasts and a reason many people stick around to call this place home.

Towards the top end you’ll find some of the bigger mountain names such as Squaw Valley and Northstar for world class skiing. Towards the south has Heavenly and Kirkwood mountain resorts. But it doesn’t end there. There are even more smaller resorts dotted around Lake Tahoe, which really give something for everyone. Whether you are looking to escape the crowds for some peace and quiet, or if a busier town with a party atmosphere is your kind of thing.

San Francisco’s proximity to Lake Tahoe is really quite incredible. Sierra At Tahoe is only three hours away and the easiest to get to if you’re looking for some fun on the slopes. If you want some turns and don’t have time to spare – that’ll be a safe bet!

I’m not going to sit here and convince you of why you need to give skiing a try – the sheer number of people that go year on year should be enough to show you that! And if skiing isn’t quite your thing? Well read on, there’s plenty of other adventure around Lake Tahoe to be had.

Lake Tahoe Snow Shoeing

If you can walk, you can snowshoe! Snowshoeing has become increasingly popular over the years and I believe the reason is as simple as that. All you have to do is strap on a pair and get going. There really is nothing as magical as a snow capped forest. With the thick snow pack absorbing sound, you’ll never experience a quiet surrounding quite like it.

One of the most popular spots to enjoy snowshoeing around Lake Tahoe is at Camp Richardson. You’ll be treated with fantastic lake views from the south side, as you make your way along 10km of marked trails. You have the option of renting and trailblazing by yourself.

Alternatively, you can book a guide / instructor who will show you the ropes and take you on a magical journey. Once you’ve looped back round to the Mountain Center, pop in to the Beacon Bar & Grill and treat yourself the their signature Rum Runner cocktail – you’ve deserved it!

If you’re packing your own set of snowshoes and want to explore a little deeper into the backcountry, then check out Chickadee Ridge. This spot is located to the west of Tahoe Meadows. In a short distance you’ll come across amazing views of the lake. And if you stick a hopeful hand in the air, you may just get a chickadee swoop down and land on it.

Cross Country Skiing in Lake Tahoe

Cross country skiing has been happening around Tahoe since the 1800s. Legendary mailman ‘Snowshoe Thompson’, was a Norwegian-America who would ski around the area delivering mail. He is hailed as the greatest mountaineer to ever set foot in Tahoe. So what better way to honor him than to go cross country skiing!

This is a slightly faster paced version of snowshoeing and allows you to cover more ground quicker. It can also help you build up a sweat and fight off the chilling winter in Lake Tahoe conditions. The top spot to try out this snow activity is Tahoe XC. This nonprofit organization offers rentals, ski passes, lessons and clinics. They are all about cross country skiing and there is no better place to give it a shot. There is 62km of world class tracks, with a variety of terrains and difficulties.

Snowmobiling Around Lake Tahoe

You got a need for speed? A craving for some high octane, adrenaline fueled frolicking around a snowy white wonderland? Snowmobiling may just be the outdoor activity in Lake Tahoe for you! A guided snowmobile tour will have you eating up that champagne powder with no need for skiing or snowboarding. All you’ll need is a drivers’ license and a thirst for good times.

Lake Tahoe Adventures know the terrain better than anybody. They offer tours for all ability lessons. For the first timers looking for a pleasant and scenic drive around the high country, they’ll take you out in a small group and promise to bring you back smiling. And if it’s not your first time? Check out their ‘Ultimate Ride’ package. You’ll go deep into the Sierra Nevada above Hope Valley. Your expert guide will get you up to speed with some safety chat and some warmup laps before embarking on a journey like no other. A mix of all terrains: bowls, meadows, rivers and alpine lakes. There’s miles and miles of space to explore – with no two tours being the same.

Lake Tahoe Ice Skating

Is it even possible to get any more wintery than ice skating? Throw on a Santa hat then the answer is no. No it can not.

If you’re looking for something to do in Lake Tahoe or where to go, the Heavenly Village skating rink is the ideal location. It could not get anymore picturesque. There are holiday lights and decorations, music playing and festive spirit in full flow. This is a wonderful family adventure as well as a great date activity (you’re welcome). And if you’re reaaaaally into ice skating? You can even buy a seasons pass.

Grab a Drink and Relax by the Fire

One of the best things to do in Lake Tahoe in winter is to wrap up in your coziest winter clothes and relax. I’m talking mittens, scarf and the wooliest of wooly hats. Grab a hot chocolate (top that bad boy off with some whiskey or Baileys) and find yourself a nice open fire to slowly slide into a slumber. Doesn’t that sounds wonderful?!

If you’re looking for a little more action there are also a number of bars and restaurants that can liven up the scene. Beacons Bar & Grill is one to check out, with a wonderful lakeside eatery and weekly live music. Sonney’s BBQ Shack Bar & Grill is also recommended for those wanting a bit more of a lively evening. They offer comfort pub grub, BBQ food (of course) and live music also.

If you really want to amp it up then try out Whiskey Dicks (and no I’m not just including them because the name makes me laugh). As well as having a damn good chuckle every time your eyes catch a glimpse of the sign – they are Tahoe’s leading live music venue and draw in bands of almost every genre.

5 Best Reno Outdoor Activities

Reno, Nevada. Based just east of the Sierra Nevada – the mountain range between the Central Valley of California and the Great Basin; and just 25 miles from Lake Tahoe. And while not always associated with adventure, there are tons of amazing Reno outdoor activities for adventure seekers and outdoorsy travelers.

Reno is known as ‘The Biggest Little City in the World”. That title makes no sense, yet all the sense at the same time… So Hotels.com has asked me to explain how this little city, with big character, is a one stop shop for all things outdoor adventure related. And with plenty of amazing accommodation options in Reno you could stay for a week and tick all these crazy adventures off your list! Here’s our top list for the best Reno outdoor activities:

River Rafting in Reno

The Truckee River is a 121 mile stretch of drainage from Lake Tahoe, crossing into both California and Nevada. There are numerous ways to enjoy it depending on your paddle skills or laziness.

Let’s start from the minimal effort end. Get yourself an oversized inner tube and float down! A great afternoon out with some beers and buddies. If you head up towards Tahoe City, at the start of the river, you’ll be able to grab all the supplies you need. For the best float without unnecessary wastage of inner tubes – rent a raft from Truckee River Raft Company. This family owned and operated business has been here since 1973, they most certainly know what they’re doing!

The 5 mile float can take between 2-3 hours. There’s plenty to see on the way: tall pine trees, rocky sections, sandy sections, wildlife and of course fellow boaters. The float ends at River Ranch Lodge & Restaurant, where you can enjoy some refreshments as you watch other boaters hurtle down the final rapid section into the pool. You can then get a shuttle from here back to the beginning and do it all over again!

Reno Kayaking Adventures

For those looking to up the ante, then how about trying it in a kayak? Sierra Adventures offer intro kayaking experiences for all group types. You’ll be boofing down rapids in no time. They also offer more advanced runs, as well as hotel pickups. This fully guided tour will ensure you don’t miss out on anything along the way. Breathtaking scenery, rapids and diverse flora and fauna.

In the heart of Reno is the Truckee River Whitewater Park. 11 drops and pools as well as various other features to test your paddle skills. This is one for those with a little more than ‘zero’ paddle experience. A year round waterpark that offers something for everybody, as kayaking is a great spectator sport – particularly if you are around in May to check out the Reno River Festival. This is an action packed weekend of whitewater contests, music and food. This free weekend events draws in over 40,000 people to Reno. The costumed slow bike ride complete with live band is surely a sight to behold.

Rock Climbing in Reno

Rock climbing has seen a huge increase in popularity in recent years, with more and more people testing their strength and nerves in this sport. Once reserved for the adrenaline junkies, more people are now reaching to rock climbing as a way to stay in shape and keep up with fitness, as opposed to regular gyms.

If you’re wondering what to do in Reno, you could check out either of its two bouldering and climbing gyms. Mesa Rim Climbing Center is the newest and largest. They also have a gym and yoga classes.

If you really want to test your vertical limits,  you can check out the worlds tallest artificial climbing wall. A whopping 164ft high, BaseCamp’s wall climbs up the side of a Reno hotel. This is truly a sight to behold and another great Reno attraction.

For outdoor climbing, fall is generally considered the best time. However, Reno has a number of world class crags that can be explored year round, making it a must-visit destination for climbers near and far. Big Chief, Twin Crags and Lovers Leap offer a range of routes from beginner slabs to long multi pitch ascents. In Stone offer guided climbing trips around Truckee and Lake Tahoe, perfect for any level climber looking to improve. Climbing is a great opportunity to not only improve physical strength, but mental strength, mindfulness, mobility and some good ole fashion family fun!

Paddle Boards in Reno

Paddle boarding is the fasted growing water sports activity around the world. Easily accessible and a fantastic way to explore the surrounding waters of Reno.

During the summer season, almost every lakeside beach will be renting out paddle boards. This will of course be the most convenient place for you to rent, as you don’t need to face the hassle of transporting the SUP (stand up paddle board). Now that’s not to say the other seasons are just as beautiful. In fact, I’d encourage paddle boarding out of the summer seasons just as much. You’ll be able to experience the seasonal colors of the surrounding trees, the calm of nature and of course even less people around.

Any launch point available along Lake Tahoe will set your Reno adventure up for success. But if you wanted a little guidance, the eastern shoreline is a popular spot. Coves, rocky sections and secret beaches aplenty. If you wanted to travel a little further then check out Pyramid Lake. This 125,000 acres lake is one of the largest natural lakes in Nevada. Pyramid Lake is widely proclaimed as North America’s most beautiful desert lake. The land here is part of the Paiute tribe and holds much significance in their history, as well as myths and beliefs. Be sure to swing by the tribe museum as well as the visitors center.

Reno Scavenger Hunt

I don’t know if I am held to any sort of recommendation writing moral code where I’m not supposed to have a favorite. In the same way that a parent shouldn’t have a favorite child… Well even if I am, I am throwing it out the window right now to tell you that THIS is the one thing you should be doing, if you could only pick one.

This will really get you out and about, around the heart of this little big city and ticking off some of the major sights along the way. Just some of the stops include: the Eldorado Resort Casino, National Bowling Center and the Truckee Whitewater Park. The main focuses of the hunt are art, culture and history. You’ll be given photo challenges to complete as well as getting your trivia tested. But really, what’s not to love about goofing around a new city with your buddies?

Strap your boots up, grab some pals or bring the family for this wonderful afternoon out taking you around the best Reno attractions. More information can be found over at ScavengerHunt.com.

Skiing in Reno

Read that again. Skiing. In. Reno.

Mt Rose ski hill is just a 25 minute drive away from Reno. It is the nearest and is still in a desert which I find pretty incredible. This local favorite resort sits at 8,260ft, with the summit reaching 9,700ft. A mountain offering something for everyone, from first time snow seekers looking for introductory lessons, to those more experienced looking to drop some chutes or explore the tree runs. And if you’re here in the summer months it’s also a great hike to check out. It is considered intermediate to difficult – so make sure you’re up to the challenge.

One Day in Miami: Travel Itinerary

Limber up, get sufficiently caffeinated and strap yourself in… Hotels.com has asked me to share my ‘One Day in Miami’ itinerary and it’s going to be one hell of a ride. They’ll be ups, downs; some wet and some wild. If you suffer from any preexisting injury, heart disease or pregnancy please proceed with caution. Use handrails and drink water. Or don’t, whatever… Let’s go!

Beach Life

What day in Miami would be complete without soaking up the rays on the beach? I’d recommend heading to South Beach with all the essentials for some quality people watching opportunities. If you don’t have your own chairs or towel, these can be hired on arrival. South Beach is very well kept, clean and has dreamy warm waters. It’s a safe spot to park up for a few hours and watch the sun come up.

The beach is lined with a number of restaurants and food vendors depending on your taste or budget. The white sands run for 2.5 miles, you could easily fill a whole day here with the numerous Miami water sports on offer.

Stand Up Paddle Boarding in Miami

With just one day to fill your boots with Miami goodness, it’s a smart move to start early and set the day up for success. A stand up paddle board session is just the way to do it. The calm and sparkly clear waters make it a fantastic place for a SUP, whether you are beginner or beyond.

You’ll be able to find SUP rentals on South Beach, as mentioned before, as this is one of the most popular spots. You’ll be joined by other SUPers and kayakers, and maybe the odd manatee or dolphin will pass by. There are a number of rental options here as well as schools offering instruction for the less confident folks out there.

With paddle boarding being such an accessible sport (you can do it pretty much anywhere), there are options available at near enough any beach you choose to go to. This allows you to get out with an early start and enjoy a moment of peace before the day ahead.

Miami Sailing and Boat Cruises

A great way to tour the cityscape is from a sailboat. You’ll be taken from bay to bay, taking in the hustle and bustle of the city from a safe and relaxing distance. Sailing Adventures Miami offer 2 hour, 4 hour and full day cruises from Biscayne Bay and around the surrounding area. You can head out during the day or take a romantic sunset cruise on their ship Good Karma. They’ll anchor up at some snorkel sites where you can use the ships swim platform to easily get in and out of the water.

If sailing isn’t fast paced enough for you, then maybe another of Miami’s water activities will take your fancy – speed boats. Thriller Miami is as Miami Vice as it gets. This power catamaran takes you on a 45minute – 3 hour whirlwind adventure, blasting you a distance x3 further than any competing vessels can cover. Perfect for those with just a day to see as much as possible… You’ll come out of warp-speed around the millionaire’s row, where some mega mansions can be oogled over.

Remember the safety warning at the start of this article? Please refer to that when considering this tour. If anything I hope makes you want to do it even more!

Miami Arts Murals

Miami is the cultural, arts and entertainment center of South Florida. Nothing encompasses this more so than the Wynwood Walls. This is an outdoor museum of international street art open to the public, free of charge. It has been spoken of as the best place in the entire world to see pieces from leading street artists, all in one place.

There are a few different sections, with a large open grass space to chill out and take it all in. A number of galleries can also be found here if you wanted to pick up a piece to take home.

Wynwood is of course not the only place to view some incredible street art. Pieces can be found all over the city, with Miami Design District being a great place to wander about. By their very nature, street art is constantly moving and ever-changing, so be sure to keep your eyes open whereever you go. You may find some hidden gems.

The Design District itself is an area dedicated to leading architecture, fashion, design and fine dining. This high end style spot is full of eye candy. Take yourself on a self guided photo tour and treat yourself to a shamancy dinner. A number of events are run here so be sure to check out their website for the calendar.

Museums & Galleries in Miami

Free Miami Museums

Lik Miami is the showcase of fine art photographer Peter Lik. The truly mesmerizing photographs of nature and landscape are best described as soul food. The gallery is that of just one person, so it is of course not huge. It does however update the works regularly and is well worth a walk through for a lesson in light. The gallery can be found on Miami Beach.

If you’re looking for free museums in Miami, The Institute of Contemporary Art is another great spot. Here, you’ll be able to get weird and wonderful by exploring some experimental pieces from the contemporary art world. The gallery holds work from up and comers, local artists and emerging talents. The exhibitions are ever changing and is a unique and free place to spend an hour or two.

Admission Fee

If you are happy to spend some money on a museum visit, then get ready for a real Miami adventure by visiting the World Erotic Art Museum. Unfortunately I don’t think it’s safe to include any photos here because it is mostly various forms and styles of penises. Big ones. Small ones. Some with glitter on them and some going into things. Some things don’t look like penises but then they actually re penises if you just look from a different angle. You get the idea… Seems like an entertaining evening and has some date night potential if you are looking for cheeky night time inspiration.

A slightly more PG option is the Perez Art Museum Miami. This is Miami’s flagship art museum and for that reason is well worth the $10-$15 entry price. Most museums have a ‘free day’ once a month, so have a look online for that to see if the dates fall into place for you. PAMM is full of pieces from various styles; contemporary, modern and sculptures. The exhibitions really show off what Miami is about, its mix of cultures and boasts its location as a crossroads of the Americas.

Yoga

It is possible to join a free yoga class every single day of the week. Every. Single. Day.

This can be found at Bayfront Park, Biscayne Bay, Kennedy Park and Margaret Pace Park in Downtown, depending on which day you have available. With such a jam packed, busy day in Miami – it’s worth taking a few moments for yourself. A chance to collect your thoughts and remind yourself of how much you have experienced or about to experience on this day!

Ocean Drive

When I think about Miami, an image conjures up in my head. Fast cars, electric colors, open shirts and that certain style of beach life glamor that you don’t get in any regular beach town. All that can be found on Ocean Drive.

Once the sun’s gone down, put on your party shoes and strut on over. Perch up on a street facing bar with a cocktail and enjoy some of the finest people watching in Miami. Many a movie has been filmed here, so you may get that strange feeling of recognizing a place you’ve never been to before. Some of the trendiest restaurants are found here, the same goes for the bars and clubs.

There are a number of cool boutique hotels along Ocean Drive. You’ll find all the options right here, as well as a full list of hotels in Miami.

Cebu Itinerary: 2 Days to One Week of Travel

If you’ve been doing your research into the Philippines, then you will sure have come across Cebu as one of the must visit destinations. Of course you have, that’s why you’re here, right?

Well, did you know Cebu not only consists of one large island but also 167 other islands? Cebu city is the oldest city in the Philippines and the first capital. This sets it apart from many of the other islands as not only does it have the lure of paradise beaches, it is one of the most developed provinces and boasts the second largest metropolitan area. This mix of sun, sand and city is what makes it such a hub for many a nomad and vacationer alike. With so much to see and do, we don’t want you missing out! So let’s dive into our recommended Cebu travel itinerary to make sure you make the most out of your trip.

Cebu Itinerary 2 Days

Getting to Cebu is easy, and both the airport and ferry terminal are found in Cebu City. So unless you’ve floated your way in on a bamboo raft, that’s where our journey begins.

With just 2 days you’ll want to keep your travel times down to a minimum. This means finding accommodation within the city or on the small island of Mactan and towards Lapu-Lapu city, conveniently where the airport is. This is where you’ll find the beach, and this is a Philippines travel itinerary after all, so this is the first thing you should be doing!

Pro-tip: if you are traveling on a budget, find cheaper accommodation away from the beachfront, take a cheap tuk-tuk ride and buy a beer at a fancy resort for pool and facility access.

One day can easily be filled living your best beach life.

Following that, you will have time to tick off some more ‘must dos’ of the city. Get your haggle skills on at Colon Street. This is Cebu’s oldest street and is full of small businesses and vendors. This would be the ideal spot for picking up some trinkets and souvenirs.

For those looking to get their blood pumping, the Sky Experience is the first of its kind in the Philippines. This 126m sky walk will have you testing your nerves as you dangle from the 37th floor of Cebu City’s Crown Regency Hotel. If that’s not enough, there’s even a rollercoaster and a zip line between buildings.

To end your day on a slightly more chilled vibe, head up to Tops Lookout to take in a phenomenal city view during sunset or to take in the night time skyline.

Some other cool spots around the city to check out include the Cebu Heritage Monument, Basilica del Santo Nino – the oldest catholic church in the Philippines and the Taoist Temple. The Taoist Temple was a personal highlight for me due to the vivid colors and stunning hillside design. Be sure to follow correct cultural practices when visiting, such as removing shoes and dressing respectfully.

Budget accommodation:  GardenPod Hostel + Café
Midrange accommodation:  OYO 208 Anika Suites
Upscale accommodation:  Maayo Hotel

Cebu Itinerary 3 Days

With 3 days in Cebu, it is well worth looking into the many island hopping options that are on offer. I would recommend finding one that includes the San Vincente Marine Sanctuary. This sanctuary is very close to Mactan and therefore you are spending less time traveling and more time enjoying.

The marine sanctuary has been put in place by the local government to protect and promote marine diversity from such things as over harvesting. Marine life is a huge source of income for local people and the longevity of this resource is vital for the future of the local people.

One of the many projects carried out here is the planting of mangroves. Mangroves are a key part in a healthy marine environment as somewhere for fish to lay eggs, a producer of oxygen and protecting the land from wave erosion.

It’s also an amazing spot for snorkeling, checking out corals and walking their 500m bamboo bridge.

Cebu Itinerary 4 Days

No list of ‘what to do in Cebu’ would be complete without a mention of Kawasan Falls. This waterfall is renowned in all of the Philippines due to its mesmerizing turquoise waters under the 40m high main falls.

Getting there is fairly simple if you’ve a rented vehicle or scooter, as the trail is well signposted. If you are traveling by bus, you can leave from the South Bus Terminal every 30mins. The bus stop is right outside the entrance path to the falls. It’s around 3-4hours bus ride away, with Moalboal being the nearest town. If you aren’t a fan of a big bus day then overnighting there would be a good idea, but we’ll get to that on Day 5.

The path up to the falls takes about 15minutes, with a restaurant at the end. Even using the tables costs money, so be happy to pay if that’s what you plan on doing. There are also lockers and lifejackets available for rent.

The falls will get busier throughout the day, so the earlier you arrive and go for a swim the better!

A path and staircase to the left leads up to the second and third set of falls. These are slightly quieter and more secluded than the main swimming area at the bottom.

There is also an option of canyoneering at the falls. This is a guided jungle trek taking you from the top down, with plenty of spots to cliff jump. These tours take about 2-3 hours. They can be arranged upon arrival or pre-booked. Pre-booking could good option if you don’t mind paying more for the inclusion of transport etc.

Cebu Itinerary 5 Days

With an extra day added to your itinerary, I’d suggest breaking up your visit to Kawasan Falls with a stay in Moalboal. This quaint town has one of the coolest natural phenomena for you to experience – the sardine bait ball!

Millions and millions of sardines move seemingly as one gigantic ball as a defense against predators. The fish themselves are totally harmless and will swarm and swim around you. The sheer number is absolutely ridiculous and has to be seen to be believed.

The best thing about the experience is it is absolutely free. They hang out around an area not far from the beach. All you need is snorkel gear. There will likely be other swimmers in the water to give you a clue of direction, but how hard can it be to find a million sardines?

There are snorkel tours that include this location plus a few others, with chances of seeing dolphins and turtles. These animals are of course wild, so set your expectations realistically and enjoy what ever you happen to come across.

Best Moalboal Accommodation Options

Upscale accommodation:  Dolphin House Resort Moalboal

Cebu Itinerary One Week

With one week in Cebu, you will be able to hit up all the best spots on offer as well we going slightly further afield. Bohol is just a 2hr ferry ride away; and home to some really incredible experiences. Here you can find the tarsier, the worlds smallest primate. These little guys are about the size of a fist yet their eyes seem to make up for most of that. The Philippine Tarsier Sanctuary is the best place for it, as their sole mission is to save this at risk species.

Bohol’s Chocolate Hills are also are sight worth seeing. The hills have been rounded from wind and water erosion, making them look like chocolate drops spread out amongst the landscape. Particularly so in dry season when the grass takes a brownish hue.

These activities can be combined into a single tour via various providers in Cebu. Alternatively you could spend the night in Bohol. This would allow some more time to experience the unique culture and environment on offer.

There’s entertainment throughout as well as a variety show after dinner.

If you’re looking for something a little more jazzy, check out the Sun Trust Sunday Jazz Brunch. This truly unique Fort Lauderdale experience takes place right on the ocean front. This is a free music event bringing you the best in local musical talent. There are 4 different stages to choose from, as well as a number of stalls from merchants and food suppliers. This event takes place on the first Sunday of every month and is still in the Miami area, so totally worth checking out even just for a day trip!

West Palm Beach

Take a walk down the heart and soul of West Palm Beach by visiting Clematis Street. This is the historical and cultural epicentre, with colorful boutiques, restaurants, live music and nightclubs.

Thursday night is when things get a little crazy over there, so that’s the day to visit. An event named ‘Clematis by Night’ takes place each week as it has done for the last 20 years. It brings music, food specials, drink deals and the best happy hour beach vibes going. You can check in on the City of West Palm Beach‘s facebook to find the latest on this event, including what bands will be playing.

The Norton Museum of Art is one of the top rated things to do near Miami, and for good reason. Established in 1941 by Ralph Hubbard Norton and Elizabeth Norton, the museum is international known for its collection of masterpieces from across the globe. The museum includes paintings, sculptures and a collection of Chinese jade and bronze artefacts. The museum offers tours throughout the day, as well as a rolling schedule of collections on show – so be sure to check what’s happening during the dates you are planning on visiting.

A charming slice of West Palm Beach is what’s known as Antique Row. With roughly 50 individual shops offering a selection of antiques, vintage tat, retro memorabilia and 17th to 20th century swag. You’ll be sure to find all those things you never knew you were looking for but now must own at whatever cost. This is not just a flea market with heftier price tags, this is a high quality antiques district and well worth checking out. Numerous publishings have touted this area as the ‘antique design center’ of Florida and it has even been voted #4 ‘best shopping in the United States‘.

National Parks Near Miami: Everglades

The Everglades is a tropical wetland region making up the southern tip of Florida. It is one of the must see places near Miami. The ecosystem created from this natural drainage basin is not found anywhere else on earth and comes with its share of equally unique and exciting wildlife.

Pick up a rental car in Miami and make your way over to Shark Valley, within Everglades National Park. You can aim for the visitors centre. You’ll find plenty of information on the surrounding area and you’ll be able to book onto a tram tour. If you’d rather go it alone, there is a 7 mile paved walkway to either hike or bike. Be sure to bring your camera! There are alligators, wild birds and interesting fish and plants. Unfortunately despite the name Shark Valley, there aren’t any sharks there.

Looking to get fully immersed in the Everglades? Take Highway 9336 down to Flamingo, quite literally the end of the road. Flamingo is one of the few places where you can see both alligators and crocodiles together in the wild. This is due to the meeting of salt and fresh water.

There are Everglades boat tours available from the marina. If you are lucky, you may also be able to see some manatees from there too!

Closest City to Miami: Hollywood

If you were looking for cities close to Miami without driving too far, Hollywood may be the best bet. The palm tree lined Hollywood Beach is a great place to bring a picnic and relax. Running parallel is a long boardwalk, with beach shops and cafes, ideal for a lazy afternoon.

The Art and Culture Centre is just a short walk away. The centre rotates through a number of different exhibitions all with a reflective touch on modern society and its concerns.  Being close to the arts school, they put on a number of student exhibitions as well as performing arts shows.

After spending so long admiring the cool and refreshing waters, you’re probably just about ready to jump on in. A ‘margarita and mangrove’ tour with Waterway Adventures could do the trick. They also offer guided fishing tours, as well as jet powered SUP and kayak rentals. Every adventure they offer comes with a comprehensive lesson on how to use the equipment, and also includes waterproof phone cases and coolers. They are based out of the 5 o’clock Somewhere Bar – a great place to grab food and drinks after your trip.

Beaches Close to Miami: Daytona Beach

Take a drive north up Highway 1 for some Atlantic ocean views all the way to Daytona Beach, one of the cities near to Miami. Destination: Bahama House. This oceanfront hotel has an outdoor swimming pool overlooking the beach and ocean, so you can be in water whilst looking at more water!

Daytona Beach is, of course, famous for its beach, all 23 miles of it. There are even some spots you can drive your car on due to the hard packed sand, or go for a bike ride. It’s easy to spend a few days playing there and the fun continues on water with various boating and parasailing options.

Daytona touts itself as the ‘festival capital of the world’. This is a big claim, but they do well to back it with festivals running year round. There’s BikeWeek, Biketoberfest, Turkey Run, Halifax Art Festival and of course the festivities of the Daytona Speedway, with 60 smaller festivals happening around that. Check online for what’s happening during your stay before making the drive over from Miami.

Top Things to Do in Orlando for Adults (Other Than Disneyland)

Orlando, Florida you say?! You must be talking Disney, rollercoasters, cotton candy and good ole fashioned, all round family friendly fun!

No? Doesn’t sound like you? Well, believe it or not there is actually much more to the city than Disney theme parks. In fact, there are plenty of fun things for adults to do in Orlando.

Orlando Food Tours

If you want to really get to the heart of a city, you must start at the belly. And what better way than joining an Orlando Food Tour, lead by locals with snouts stronger than your average bloodhound, and the ability to sniff out the tastiest treats within the community.

These guys are passionate about good food as well as supporting local businesses. You won’t be taken to any chain restaurants and will really get to find out where the lesser known hangouts are. Visiting local restaurants over chain restaurants is also a great way to support sustainable tourism for local businesses.

Ask your significant other, family members or friends where they want to go for dinner, and if the answer is, “I don’t know”, take them here! You’ll be able to sample food from a number of different places, so why choose just one when you can choose them all?

Tibet-Butler Preserve

A welcome escape from the flashing lights and candy color of the city, this nature preserve is quite literally a breath of fresh air.

Raised walkways and clear signage make for a pleasant stroll amongst the greenery. This scenery really gives you a sense of what Florida is really like. You’ll even catch a glimpse of turtles, crocs and cranes.

This preserve is absolutely free and is ideal for giving both the mind and the wallet a rest. A list of all Orlando parks can be found right here, however I would recommend Tibet-Butler above all.

Orlando Brewing

If you really want to ditch the kids and find something fun to do in Orlando for adults, then a brewery is usually a safe bet.

Orlando Brewing has set itself apart from the others. Their founders decided that they would only brew what they wanted to drink, and they wanted to drink the best. In order to stay true to this, they brew according to the German Purity Law (1516) that states that beers should only be brewed with 4 ingredients: water, hops, yeast and malted barley. That means no additives and all of their ingredients are organic.

These guys take this beer making stuff incredibly seriously and their efforts are worthy of you heading down and slinging a few jars back to pay some respects to the purists.

Orlando Brewing hosts a number of different events, so be sure to plan your visit ahead of time in order to ensure the best experience.

Oh, and did I mention it’s dog friendly?

Bob’s Balloons

Take a flight over Orlando or the surrounding area. Bob offers fully customizable balloon rides and is happy to accommodate a suggestion of route and flight path. This is, of course, ultimately dictated by the wind, but if it can happen, he’ll make it happen!

Not only that, if you have a large enough garden or space in your area, Bob can depart or land right at your home! If that’s not a baller entrance to a party then I don’t know what’s good in the world.

A balloon ride is a fantastic way of celebrating an event such as an anniversary, special occasion or a treat for your dogs birthday. And what better way to view the city than to peacefully drift with the wind, above the trees and away from the hustle and bustle. It’s also a chance for wildlife spotting, viewing lakes and the other attractions of Florida.

Rock Dinner

The Rock Dinner Show is the highest rated dinner show in all of Orlando which basically means you’d be a fool to miss it!

The show is a sing-your-heart-out, ballad packed jam-fest with all the most iconic rock and pop bangers, served to you in a high-energy musical journey. Say that sentence three times quickly and you’ll be sufficiently hyped up and ready to rock!

Not only will your evening’s soundtrack be of A* standard, accompanied with stunning visual effects and performers, the 3 course meal served comes with its own collection of awards and accolades. This really is a full package when it comes to a great night out, with every detail covered.

Clear Kayak Tours in Rock Springs

Take advantage of the crystal clear spring waters by paddling about in a see through kayak. The clear boat will break the surface water tension, allowing you to see straight down to the bottom and spot whatever else may be sharing the waters with you.

Not only is kayaking a great way to escape the heat and cool down in the waters, it’s also one of the best modes of transport for wildlife spotting. You’ll be able to silently cruise along the water whilst your knowledgeable guide gives you the low down of the surrounding nature. As well as whatever wildlife you happen to come across. With all wildlife spotting, it is of course a gamble on what you see, but some of the locals in the area include turtles, otters, deer and alligators!

There are numerous scenic photo spots, as well as a rope swing for those feeling a little more adventurous.

This tour is located at Rock Springs which is a little further outside of the city. There are a few different ways to get over there, but an Orlando car rental would be the easiest and most convenient.

Like kayaking? Check out our Lake Tahoe road trip guide for the top spots to experience kayaking on the lake.

SAK Comedy Lab

Live improv comedy – a good way to get your sides splitting from laughter. Improv comedy shows are made up throughout the night, with performers branching off from crowd suggestions either in skits, characters, jokes or making up songs.

The SAK Comedy Lab was the proving ground of many successful comedians including Wayne Brady, as well as writers, actors and producers for shows such as, “Whose Line Is It Anyway?”, “Saturday Night Live”, “Scrubs”, “The Office’, amongst others.

By heading down to the comedy show for a beer or glass of wine, you may well be about to witness the next big name to rock the comedy world!

Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition Dinner Gala

So you were looking for something different to do in Orlando, well this is just about as unique as it gets. You can live out all of your Jack and Rose fantasies by joining this Titanic Dinner Gala!

Guests are invited on to the Titanic, given a boarding pass and encouraged to discover your character and learn their story. A tour is given of the ship and of various artifacts, before a cocktail party followed by a 3 course meal. There is an interactive show with actors playing the roles of real life passengers, which you can also join in on.

Suits, gowns and formal attire is recommended, however you will be fine turning up in casual clothing too.

Fun Things to Do in Orlando Other than Disney

Well, I think that settles it… there are a TON of fun adult activities to do in Orlando. Comedy shows, breweries, food food food! The surrounding area is teeming with wildlife, you just have to get outside the city limits in order to enjoy.

Each of the above activities can supplement your high-adrenaline theme park tour, or can make up an entirely new itinerary. And why chose just one? You can experience the best of everything with the convenience of renting a car in Orlando, getting your Disney princess fix and still have time to get out and enjoy the overlooked wonders of the city, such as clear kayaking and hot air balloon rides.
